Originally built in 1925 as the Berkeley City Mayor’s residence, 2425 Durant Avenue sits in the heart of Berkeley’s most dynamic student neighborhood — just 1-minute walk from UC Berkeley. Today, the site comprises three classic buildings with 19 units and 23 bedrooms, surrounded by UC Berkeley’s high-rise residence halls and the lively dining and retail corridor of Telegraph and Durant Avenues.
Looking to the future, the property will be transformed into Durant Tower — a 20-story, next-generation student housing community and the tallest student residence ever built in Berkeley. Designed in collaboration with Yes Community Architects, Durant Tower will offer 169 purpose-built student units and over 145,000 square feet of living and amenity space.
With preliminary entitlements approved, Collab plans to break ground in early 2027 and complete construction by 2030, establishing Durant Tower as a new architectural landmark in the city of Berkeley and a model for the future of student living in the United States.
